Why do people flinch when I raise my hand?
It's meant to protect you and raise your body's defense. Everybody flinches because we've all felt a type of pain before. Whether it's to defend ourselves from a physical attack like someone raising their hands or someone flinching at the thought of going on a date or taking initiative with something, it's all natural.
Heightened Startle Response
This can be anything from reacting excessively to a tap on the shoulder, to flinching when being called by name. Certain actions, from sudden movement to something related to the trauma, may result in more of a startle response.
This super sensitivity is often referred to as a “case of the nerves,” being “on edge,” or being “jumpy.” Having a hyper reactive nervous system is a common consequence of stress-response hyperstimulation. As stimulation increases, so does the nervous system's sensitivity and reactivity.
People with hypersensitivity are oversensitive to things in their environment. If you've ever been irritated by the sound of a dripping tap or a shirt that's too tight, or you flinch if someone touches your arm, you'll have some idea of what sensory hypersensitivity feels like.
Some types of neurotransmitters will “tell” your muscles to move. When you have anxiety, neurotransmitters may be released even when there's no clear reason for them to be released. This is what can cause anxiety twitching. Another reason anxiety can cause muscle twitching is because it can cause you to hyperventilate.
Physical Abuse Warning Signs
Their injuries may appear to have a pattern such as marks from a hand or belt. Be always watchful and “on alert,” as if waiting for something bad to happen. Shy away from touch, flinch at sudden movements, or seem afraid to go home.
Initial reactions to trauma can include exhaustion, confusion, sadness, anxiety, agitation, numbness, dissociation, confusion, physical arousal, and blunted affect. Most responses are normal in that they affect most survivors and are socially acceptable, psychologically effective, and self-limited.
The responses are usually referred to as the 4Fs – Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn and have evolved as a survival mechanism to help us react quickly to life-threatening situations.
People with post-traumatic stress often startle easily. For example, if someone has been in a car accident, they may have heightened startle responses in traffic afterward.
Your child's body is reacting to tactile defensiveness and tactile hyposensitivity where their brain is telling them they can't attend or function until the brain and the body is calmed down.
Can you control flinching?
The good news is that training out the flinch response is pretty straightforward. With a little time and practice, you'll kick the flinch habit to the curb. If you're looking for other ways to improve and expand on your marksmanship skills, consider trying our tactical training courses.
Historically, an exaggerated startle reflex has been associated with a variety of psychopathological disorders including “combat neurosis” and posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD].

"When someone gets too close to us ... the part of the brain known as the amygdala is triggered as we (potentially unconsciously) feel we might be attacked." Obviously, if you recoil or flinch at your partner's touch, it's a clear indicator that you're uncomfortable around them.
The body has a natural reflex that will prepare itself to embrace a hit or react quickly to an unexpected stimuli. The reason it happens is to protect the body. Psychopath or not, everyone flinches. It's a self-defence mechanism, it's evolutionary.
Muscle twitches are caused when your brain interprets anxiety as stress and sends signals to your body that trigger muscle spasms. These spasms can occur in different muscle groups at any time. Learning how to effectively manage stress and anxiety is the best way to prevent and manage anxiety-induced muscle twitching.
Hyperreflexia (brisk reflexes) – reflexes that are faster than normal, jumpy, and seem “trigger happy” – is a common anxiety disorder symptom, including anxiety and panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, and others.
When you're anxious, you may feel jittery, on edge, or even physically shaky. This is in part due to how anxiety makes your muscles tenser. Essentially, when you're anxious, your body's fight-or-flight response is triggered. That causes your body to release adrenaline, even if it's inappropriate for the situation.
Essentially, flinch when I come toward you or I pretend to hit you. That is an assault. There is also verbal assault, when I call you names or I threaten to hurt you. Actual battery means touching, physically and connecting with the assault.
If the person says hurtful things on a regular basis and you find yourself feeling awful about yourself often, you are probably in an emotionally abusive relationship. A lot of times emotionally abusive people tag their victims as "too sensitive" and they tell you that's what you are when you get upset.
If you rely on others to control your happiness or you are financially dependent on others, you are more likely to be a victim of abuse. Abusers seek to control the emotions and actions of others, which means if you depend on others for emotional support, you're making yourself a target.
What is it called when someone flinches?
Some common synonyms of flinch are blench, quail, recoil, shrink, and wince. While all these words mean "to draw back in fear or distaste," flinch implies a failure to endure pain or face something dangerous or frightening with resolution.
(intransitive) If a person flinches, they make a sudden involuntary movement in response to a stimulus.
Move | Type | Accuracy |
---|---|---|
Air Slash | Flying | 95% |
Astonish | Ghost | 100% |
Bite | Dark | 100% |
Bone Club | Ground | 85% |
Feint: Faking or feinting a punch is used to make an opponent unnecessarily react, or to gauge his response so that it throws him off his game or makes him commit to a false move.
If you flinch, you make a small sudden movement, especially when something surprises you or hurts you. Leo stared back at him without flinching. If you flinch from something unpleasant, you are unwilling to do it or think about it, or you avoid doing it.
"When someone gets too close to us ... the part of the brain known as the amygdala is triggered as we (potentially unconsciously) feel we might be attacked." Obviously, if you recoil or flinch at your partner's touch, it's a clear indicator that you're uncomfortable around them.
Shying away from hugs and kisses might just mean that your kid is sensitive to touch or values extra independence right now (perfectly normal).
Sometimes children don't want physical affection because they're not in the mood, and other times it could be a specific person they don't want to cuddle. It could just be one of those things, there's no reason why but your child just doesn't want to give them a kiss goodbye.
"Essential" Tremor (ET) (Kinetic Tremor / Familial Tremor)
Most common involuntary movement disorder, typified by a rapid postural tremor most often of the upper extremities. Progressive, may appear at anytime of life but most commonly >70 years.
The most common movement disorders are essential tremor, restless legs syndrome, and Parkinson's disease. Movement disorders range from mild to severely debilitating, and many have very similar symptoms. It is vitally important to get an accurate diagnosis.
What is it called when you have uncontrolled movements?
Patients with dystonia may experience uncontrollable twisting, repetitive movements or abnormal postures and positions. These can affect any part of the body, including the arms, legs, trunk, eyelids and vocal cords. General dystonias involves the entire body.

Inner Focus prevents the Pokémon from flinching. However, Pokémon with this Ability can still flinch to a Pokémon with Mold Breaker, Teravolt, or Turboblaze. While some descriptions state that the user flinches, Focus Punch failing due to taking damage is not flinching, so the move is unaffected by Inner Focus.
Said after causing someone to flinch in anticipation of an attack, implying that the act of flinching permits the attack to be repeated.
